Strawberry tree

A distinctive evergreen tree native to the Mediterranean, Arbutus unedo is admired for its glossy, deep green foliage, textured reddish bark and ornamental fruits that ripen from yellow to bright red. Its delicate, bell-shaped flowers often appear alongside the previous season’s fruit, creating an appealing contrast of colour and texture. Naturally sculptural and well adapted to dry summers, it brings a timeless Mediterranean character to terraces and gardens.

Light: Full sun to partial shade; sunnier positions encourage flowering and fruiting
Location: Outdoors, in a sunny, sheltered spot with room to develop its natural shape
Watering: Water regularly while establishing, then moderately. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings
Soil: Well-draining, preferably slightly acidic soil; dislikes waterlogged conditions
Flowering: Small, white to pale pink, bell-shaped flowers appear in autumn, often alongside ripening fruits
Cold sensitivity: Tolerates light frost once established, but protect young plants and container-grown specimens from severe or prolonged freezing temperatures

Please note: Arbutus unedo is a slow-growing species, and flowering and fruiting may take time to establish. Fruit production and ripening depend on seasonal conditions, sunlight and the plant’s maturity.
